About  /  Sheffield

A shop about weights and marks, in the city that strikes them.

P .A. JEWELLERY LIMITED has traded from Sheffield since 15 May 2007. Cufflink & Co is the part of it that sells men’s formal metalwork online — the small pieces of metal that finish a shirt.

A jeweller's bench: a worn bench pin, hand files laid in a row, a ring mandrel and silver offcuts.

01  /  Why Sheffield

One of four.

There are four assay offices in the United Kingdom — London, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Sheffield. The Sheffield office has been testing and striking silver since 1773, and its rose mark is on a great deal of the British silver still in circulation.

That is not a marketing story so much as an explanation of how this shop ended up organised around weights and marks rather than around adjectives. Working within a mile of an assay office makes hallmarking a practical daily fact rather than a footnote.

  1. 01

We publish the number, not the adjective

Every article states its metal purity, its net weight per article in grams, whether it carries a hallmark and how it fastens. Those four facts are on the card, at the top of the product page and in the bag.

  2. 02

The law is in the code

A precious metal article recorded above its statutory exemption weight without a struck mark is removed from the storefront automatically. A base metal article structurally cannot print hallmark language. Neither depends on anyone remembering.

  3. 03

We will tell you not to buy

The commonest reason a cufflink is returned is that the buyer's shirt has a barrel cuff and physically cannot take one. Our matcher checks that second and returns nothing rather than something.

  4. 04

    We do not engrave insignia

Letters, initials, dates and simple geometry, yes. Armorial bearings, regimental and university devices, police badges and registered marks, no — to anyone, including people entitled to them.

02  /  Plainly

What we are not.

We are a retail shop. We sell finished consumer accessories for personal wear, at one-off prices, with no subscription and no membership.

We do not deal in bullion. We do not buy metal from the public. We do not offer credit, and we make no claim that anything sold here holds its value or appreciates. If you are looking for an investment, this is the wrong shop, and we would rather say so on this page than let you find out later.
